Conclusion
On June 6, 2014, Mike Lavallee was found dead in his cell at the Folsom State Prison in California. The cause of death was ruled to be suicide by hanging. Lavallee had been serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole since 2005 for the murder of his girlfriend, Tessa Tranchant.
In 2005, Lavallee and Tranchant were both students at Virginia Tech. On April 16th of that year, Seung-Hoi Cho carried out a mass shooting on campus, killing 32 people and himself. Tranchant was one of the victims.
Lavallee was arrested and charged with her murder even though there was no evidence linking him to the crime. Witnesses said that he had been angry with her prior to the shooting and that he had made threatening comments towards her, but none of them saw him actually commit the murder.
Prosecutors argued that Lavallee must have killed Tranchant because she was trying to break up with him and he didn’t want to let her go.
They also pointed to his history of domestic violence as evidence that he was capable of murdering her.
Lavallee maintained his innocence until his death, claiming that he loved Tranchant and would never hurt her.
